ATTENDANCE / ABSENCES

WHAT TO DO WHEN YOUR STUDENT IS ABSENT

Dear Parent/Guardian

We would like to help you and your students in any way we can to alleviate the attendance concerns.  Any time a student is absent, it is a concern to us, since absences cause a student to miss significant instruction and learning opportunities at school.

We recommend that you carefully follow these steps when your child must miss or has missed school.

-Call the school office to report that the student will be absent that day (if possible). That will help us to know the reason the child is not coming that day so we can better help the student and parents.

-Send a note the next day or when the child returns to school (even if you have called the school).

Parents have 5 days to send an excuse note, but we highly recommend sending the note sooner rather than later.  Parents can drop the note to the office, send the note with the student, send the note by email, jaqueline.reyes@fwisd.org or upload the note to the PARENT PORTAL

Keep in mind...

- When the student is sick, a Parent's Note is accepted for only 2 consecutive days of being absent. For 3 days or more, a doctor's note is required.

-When the student is absent for a reason other than illness (like a Family Emergency), proof might be required. There are other cases in which the parent note can be accepted but must be approved by the Principal.

 What happens with Unexcused Absences?

After 3 unexcused absences, parents will receive a warning letter.

After 5 Unexcused Absences, parents will be notified to come to school for an attendance meeting in which you must sign an Attendance Agreement.

After 10 Unexcused Absences parents will be notified to go to Court.

To avoid all this, parents need to make sure the student is attending school every day, and in case of being absent, make sure to send the proper documentation.

The Attendance Committee will determine if your child needs to go to Attendance Restoration for all excused and unexcused days, and will let you know the next steps.
